Thrust roller bearings are a type of bearing designed to support axial loads, i.e. loads that act along the bearing axis (in the direction of the shaft's axis of rotation). They differ from radial bearings in that they are designed specifically to handle axial forces.
Thrust roller bearings consist of rollers that are positioned at an angle to the axis of rotation. This allows them to effectively transmit axial loads. The rollers can be single or double row, which allows the bearings to withstand higher loads.
- single row thrust roller bearings (axial loads in one direction);
- double-row thrust roller bearings (axial loads in both directions).
Thrust roller bearings are not able to withstand significant radial loads, so they are usually used in systems where axial forces dominate.
They can have different angles of inclination of the rollers to the axis of rotation, which affects their characteristics and ability to withstand axial loads in different conditions.
- in gearboxes, compressors, pumps that operate with axial loads;
- in turbines and heavy machine tools;
- in wheel hub bearings;
- in excavators and fastening machines.
Thrust roller bearings are characterized by a high ability to withstand axial loads, so they are used where compactness, strength and reliability under high forces are important.
